Amperage is a wiring decision, not a shopping one

This is the part most roundups skip, and it's the part that costs money. The charger's amperage doesn't just set charging speed — it dictates the circuit an electrician has to run, and that circuit is frequently the larger line item.

The enclosure is NEMA 4X — Autel specifies protection against windblown dust, rain, splashing and hose-directed water, and damage from external ice formation. The 25-foot cable is explicitly specified to stay flexible in the cold, which is a real complaint about cheaper cables in winter and a nice thing to see addressed in a spec rather than a marketing line.

The RFID card lock is the differentiator nobody else here offers: it prevents unauthorised use, which matters if your charger is on a shared driveway, in a duplex, or anywhere a neighbour could help themselves. Amperage is app-adjustable across 16/24/32/40A, and install is a five-minute plug into an existing NEMA 14-50 receptacle.

On price it now sits between the two other 40A units rather than up against the 48A ones — close enough to the Grizzl-E that the choice between them comes down to what you want from the enclosure and the app rather than the money. Where it still costs you is the ceiling: stepping up to the 48A EVIQO is only about $53 more, so if your panel can carry a 60A circuit that's a real comparison to make. Note also the 2.63-foot input cord — that's the pigtail from the unit to the outlet, and it means the charger has to be mounted close to the receptacle regardless of how long the charging cable is.

Skip it if you can run a 60A circuit and would rather have 48A, or if you don't need the RFID lock — the Grizzl-E gives you the same amperage in a cast-metal case for less.

The Pulsar Plus is what you buy when the charger has to look good. Wallbox builds it deliberately small — a compact body that reads as part of the house rather than equipment bolted to it — and pairs that with WiFi and Bluetooth (so the app still works when garage WiFi doesn't) and a casing the listing rates for outdoor use from -22°F to 104°F. It's UL and ENERGY STAR certified and assembled in the US.

One caveat on the spec sheet, and it is the reason two cells in the table above read as a dash: the 48A Pulsar Plus that Amazon actually stocks is the NACS variant, and its listing states no enclosure rating, no cable length and no warranty term. Wallbox publishes those figures for the range on its own site, but we are not going to transfer them onto a specific variant whose listing does not carry them — the same call we make for the Emporia.

The Bluetooth fallback deserves a specific mention because it's the one smart feature here that solves a real problem. Garages are where WiFi goes to die; a charger that can still be configured and controlled over Bluetooth when the network drops is more useful than a longer feature list.

The catch is simply money: about $700 before installation, roughly $220 more than the Emporia for the same 48A output and the same NACS connector. You're paying for the industrial design and the dual-radio app. If the charger lives behind a closed garage door where nobody sees it, that's a hard case to make.

Skip it if the unit won't be visible, or if you'd rather put $220 toward the electrical work.

How to choose

Work through these in order — the first two eliminate most of the list.

  1. Connector. Tesla or a 2025+ native-NACS EV: Emporia, EVIQO or Wallbox. Anything with a J1772 port: Grizzl-E, Lectron, ChargePoint or Autel. Adapters work in both directions but add a part to lose.
  2. Install path. Already have a NEMA 14-50 outlet, or want the option to take the charger with you? Plug-in: Emporia, Grizzl-E, Lectron, Autel. Willing to pay an electrician for a cleaner, higher-output install? Hardwired: EVIQO, ChargePoint, Wallbox, or Emporia converted.
  3. Amperage, against your panel and your car. 40A on a 50A circuit suits nearly everyone charging overnight. Go 48A only if your car's onboard charger accepts it and your panel can carry a 60A circuit. Every adjustable unit here can be set lower than its maximum.
  4. Cable length. Measure from the mounting spot to the car's port as it actually parks, then add slack for bend radius. 23-25 ft covers most garages; the Lectron's 16 ft does not, unless the outlet is close.
  5. Weather rating, if it's going outside. NEMA 4X (Grizzl-E, Autel) or NEMA 4 with IP66 (EVIQO) for exposed walls. NEMA 3R (ChargePoint) for sheltered spots. Emporia and Wallbox publish no rating.
  6. Certification. UL or ETL, without exception. All seven have it — treat anything that doesn't as disqualified regardless of price.

Whichever you choose, the charger is often the cheap part — the 240V circuit can cost as much as the hardware, and more if your panel needs work. Get an electrician's quote for the circuit before you commit to an amperage, because the answer to "40A or 48A?" is frequently decided by your panel rather than your preference.
