A Model Y is a heavy crossover sold on four wheel sizes, and two of its setups run different tires front and rear. So when its tires wear out, the first question isn't which brand to buy. It's which size, load rating and speed rating your car needs, because a tire that's right for one Model Y can be wrong for the next one in the parking lot.
The short answer: read your sidewall, then pick a season. A 19-inch Model Y takes 255/45R19 and a 20-inch takes 255/40R20, both XL tires with at least an H speed rating. The 21-inch Performance and the six-seat Model Y L run different sizes front and rear. For snow, Tesla says to fit four winter tires, never two.
We have not owned a Model Y or tested these tires. The sizes and rules below come from Tesla's owner's manual and shop, with a tire-size database and a wheel maker's guide filling the gaps Tesla's pages don't cover, all cited at the end. Each tire's ratings come from its own listing, which we checked on 2026-10-05.
Which Model Y do you have?
| Your Model Y | Factory size and minimum rating | Picks |
|---|---|---|
| 19-inch wheels: Gemini (before the 2025 refresh) or Crossflow (after it) | 255/45R19, 104 XL, H | Turanza EV or CrossClimate2 · winter: Sottozero 3 Elect |
| 20-inch wheels: Induction (before the 2025 refresh) or Helix 2.0 (after it) | 255/40R20, 101 XL or 104 XL, H | Hankook iON evo AS or Michelin e.Primacy · winter: Sottozero 3 |
| Model Y Standard, 18-inch Aperture wheels (2025 on) | 235/55R18, per a tire-size database | No pick yet; match your sidewall |
| Model Y Standard with the 19-inch option | 255/45R19, as above | Same as the 19-inch row |
| Performance on 21-inch wheels | 255/35R21 front, 275/35R21 rear | No pick; read this first |
| Model Y L six-seater | 19-inch: 255/45R19 104 XL front, 275/45R19 108 XL rear. 20-inch: 255/40R20 101 XL front, 275/40R20 106 XL rear. All V minimum | No pick; staggered |
If your Model Y is a Performance or a Model Y L, don't buy four of any tire on this page: those cars run different sizes front and rear, and Tesla's manual says replacement wheels must be staggered the same way as the originals.

Bridgestone Turanza EV 255/45R19 104W All Season XL 19 inch (DC) Tire
- 255/45R19 104W XL (extra load), all-season, 4-ply rated.
- Listed with a UTQG rating of 500AA and 50,000 miles of treadwear.
- Load index 104 (up to 1,984 lb per tire) and a W speed rating (up to 168 mph).
- Black sidewall, radial construction; tire only, no wheel.
Bridgestone's Turanza EV is a same-size replacement for 19-inch wheels: an all-season tire from Bridgestone's EV line in exactly 255/45R19, rated 104W XL, which meets Tesla's 104 XL load minimum and beats its H speed minimum. The listing quotes 50,000 miles of treadwear and a UTQG grade of 500AA. At $319.99 a tire (as of 2026-10-05) it costs less than the other 19-inch picks here, and it's the one we'd fit unless your winters call for something else.
19-inch wheels: 255/45R19
The 19-inch size covers the Gemini wheel from before the 2025 refresh, the Crossflow after it, and the 19-inch option on the Model Y Standard. All three take 255/45R19 on every corner, so one tire covers them all.

All-weather: one set for occasional snow
MICHELIN CROSSCLIMATE2 A/W CUV 255/45R19 104V XL (Set of 1 Tire Only)
- All-weather tire in 255/45R19 with a 104V XL rating; sold as a single tire
- Michelin says it is designed to perform in every climate, with strong wet and dry braking
- Michelin claims it stops shorter than four leading competitors in dry and wet conditions
- Michelin claims up to 15,000 more miles of tread life than four leading competitors
Michelin's CrossClimate2 is the tire for drivers who see snow a few days a year but don't want to swap sets twice a year. Michelin says it is 3PMSF certified, meaning it carries the three-peak mountain snowflake, the same symbol Tesla's manual uses to identify a winter tire. Its 104V XL rating meets Tesla's 19-inch minimums. It costs $349.99 a tire (as of 2026-10-05). Where snow and ice last for months, we'd still fit a dedicated winter set from the section below.
20-inch wheels: 255/40R20
The 20-inch Induction wheel (before the refresh) and the Helix 2.0 (after it) take 255/40R20 on all four corners. Tesla's manual accepts a load index of 101 XL or 104 XL here, with at least an H speed rating; both all-season picks below are 101W XL.

EV all-season for 20-inch wheels
Hankook iON evo AS SUV IH01A All Season 255/40R20 101W XL Passenger Tire
- Hankook's iON family is a purpose-built EV line; the evo AS SUV (IH01A) is the variant aimed at heavier crossovers and SUVs
- All-season compound rather than a summer-only fitment
- XL load rating (101W) for the extra curb weight a battery pack adds
- 255/40R20 — one of the most common Model Y and EV-crossover sizes
Hankook's iON line is built for electric vehicles, and the evo AS SUV is the variant aimed at heavier crossovers. This 255/40R20 101W XL version matches the Model Y's 20-inch size exactly, at $375.99 a tire (as of 2026-09-08).

Alternative for 20-inch wheels
Michelin e.Primacy All Season Car Tire for Passenger, SUVs, and CUVs - 255/40R20/XL 101W
- Michelin's most efficiency-focused premium all-season line, built around low rolling resistance to protect range
- Rated by the manufacturer for gas, hybrid and electric vehicles
- Tuned for a quieter, more comfortable ride — the priority once there's no engine noise to mask the tires
- XL load rating (101W) — the reinforced construction a heavier EV needs
Michelin's e.Primacy is the efficiency-focused alternative in the same 255/40R20 101W XL size. Michelin rates it for gas, hybrid and electric vehicles and builds it around low rolling resistance. At $350.99 a tire (as of 2026-09-08) it costs less than the Hankook.
Winter tires and snow chains
Tesla's manual is blunt about it: in cold temperatures or on snow and ice, summer and all-season tires don't provide adequate traction, and where snow or ice may be present, Tesla recommends winter tires. Its rules for fitting them:
- All four, always. Install a complete set at the same time, matching in diameter, brand, construction and tread pattern.
- Look for the mountain and snowflake. That symbol on the sidewall is how the manual identifies a winter tire.
- Keep the speed rating. Tesla says a replacement tire's load and speed ratings must equal or exceed the original's, and the original is H on the 19- and 20-inch wheels (V on the six-seater). Some winter tires in these sizes are T-rated, which falls short; Nokian's Hakkapeliitta R5 in 255/45R19, for example, is listed as 104T. Both winter picks here are W-rated.
- Mind the tread. Tires with less than 4 mm of tread don't perform well in snow and slush, and Tesla says they shouldn't be used in winter conditions.
- Reset the car afterwards. Reset the tire configuration under Controls > Service > Wheel & Tire > Tires. The manual warns that aggressive winter compounds can temporarily reduce regenerative braking until the car recalibrates.

Winter, 19-inch wheels
Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 Elect Winter 255/45R19 104W XL Electric Vehicle Tire
- Winter tire made for electric vehicles, in 255/45R19 with a 104W XL rating
- Tread pattern designed for grip on ice, snow and wet roads, per the listing
- Low rolling resistance aimed at EV efficiency and range
- Winter compound that stays flexible in low temperatures
Pirelli's Winter Sottozero 3 Elect is a winter tire made for EVs, and this 255/45R19 104W XL version meets Tesla's 19-inch minimums. It costs $328.52 a tire (as of 2026-10-05). Tesla's own 21-inch winter wheel package for the 2025-on Performance uses Pirelli's Winter Sottozero 3 as well.

Winter, 20-inch wheels
Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 255/40R20 101W
- Winter tire in 255/40R20 with a 101W rating
- Pirelli Noise Canceling technology aimed at a quieter ride, per the listing
- 3D sipe technology aimed at better braking, per the listing
- Compound built for winter grip
For 20-inch wheels, the regular (non-Elect) Winter Sottozero 3 comes in 255/40R20 101W. Its listing gives the 101 load index but doesn't say XL, and Tesla's minimum is 101 XL, so confirm the XL marking with the seller before you order. It costs $381.72 a tire (as of 2026-10-05).
Snow chains
Where chains are required, Tesla's manual lists the ones it has tested and approved. The edition we could access names König XG-12 Pro size 252 for 19- and 20-inch five-seat cars, and König K-Summit XXL K66 for 21-inch wheels and the 19-inch six-seater; it lists no chain for a 20-inch six-seater. Tesla adds that the current list is in your car's touchscreen manual, so check it before you buy.

Tesla-approved chains for 19- and 20-inch five-seaters
KÖNIG Snow chains XG-12 PRO 252
- Size 252; the listing names compatible tires as 255/45-19 and 255/40-20 on 9.5J rims
- Mounts from a single stop: a cable runs behind the wheel, and the chain tensions itself after the first few meters
- Parts that can touch the rim are made of or covered in scratch-resistant composite
- Certified to Ö-Norm V5117 and V5119 and EN 16662-1:2020, per the listing
Order size 252 specifically. The listing names its compatible tires as 255/45-19 and 255/40-20 on 9.5J rims, which are the Model Y's 19- and 20-inch tire sizes on the 9.5-inch-wide wheels in Tesla's manual. Other XG-12 Pro sizes, such as 250 and 255, are cut for different tires, and even where König's own size chart lists these Model Y tires under another chain size, Tesla's approval names the 252, so don't substitute. The 252 costs $294.95 (as of 2026-10-05).
Tesla's rules for using them: rear tires only, wheel covers off first, never on summer tires, no faster than 48 km/h (30 mph), never let air out of the tires to fit them, and remove them as soon as conditions allow. Tesla says non-approved chains, or chains on other tire sizes, can damage the suspension, body, wheels and brake lines, and its warranty won't cover that. Some places ban chains outright, so check local rules.
Performance and the 21-inch wheels
The 21-inch Performance setup is staggered: 255/35R21 at the front and 275/35R21 at the rear. That changes three things. You can't buy four of the same tire. Tesla says a staggered setup with non-directional tires can be rotated side to side, but not front to back. And if you change wheels, the manual says the new ones must be staggered the same way.
If your Performance runs summer tires, Tesla's manual says their traction drops below 5°C (41°F), that they aren't recommended in snow or ice, and that chains must never go on them. Tesla's own 21-inch winter package for the 2025-on Performance keeps the stagger, with two 255/35R21 and two 275/35R21 Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 tires, according to Tesla's shop. We don't pick a 21-inch tire here: with two sizes and a summer-or-winter decision to make, it's a match-your-sidewall purchase.

Before you buy
- Read the sidewall. Size, load index and speed rating are all printed there. Match the size, and match or exceed the load index and speed rating.
- Keep the load range. Tesla says to replace tires with the same load range, and the 19- and 20-inch factory tires are XL.
- Replacing early? After a puncture, say, Tesla recommends replacing tires in pairs unless the others are within 1.5 mm of the new tire's tread depth, matching the old tires' brand and model, and putting the new pair on the rear if all four tires are the same size.
- Six years is the limit. Tesla recommends replacing tires every six years even if the tread depth is still fine.
- Rotate on schedule. Every 10,000 km (about 6,200 miles), per Tesla, and only side to side on a staggered car with non-directional tires.
On 19-inch wheels, start with the Turanza EV:
For why EV tires differ in the first place (load ratings, foam liners and rolling resistance), our EV tires guide goes deeper. If you drive the new Model Y Standard, its fitment guide covers what else changed. And winter means slush on the floor: our Model Y floor mats guide sorts sets by generation.
